Social marketing is ALL about relationships and the trust that ensues from a referral that comes from a trusted friend or colleague. There is something lacking still the absolute real time interaction with people. Google Wave provides that, more so than the IM chat on a website does. But the people manning the replies from one's organization must be knowledgeable in the products, messages, etc.. Small businesses can do this but large ones have an issue, how much is it worth to pay these people, plus how to do it with or without bots and still make sense and personal. Ask song writers about their top songs and some will say they hated it but others told them it was good. Sometimes it's the ones we least expect that become #1. This is no different, but as we get more interactive and video based(Skype has helped) real time live face to face should be replacing IM on websites and provide that better personal touch.
