Lotus Foundations with PBX! Watch out Microsoft!

Have you realized the true potential of Lotus Foundations? Check out this discussion on Lotus Foundations User Group on linkedin. This is just too good to pass up.

Brian Connelly of Westfield Group writes,

I was able to load TrixboxCE into a virtual partition on my Lotus Foundations server; what’s more it connected with my ISTP (Internet Service Telephony Provider) without incident. So with enough hardware horse power I could have a full feature PBX on my Lotus Foundations Server along with everything else IBM provides. Voice mail, music on hold, integrated voice response, unlimited extensions, voice mail – email integration, multiple trunks, Ring groups, call queues, conference bridging, follow me, web access to voice mail the list goes on and on. So I think we can say MS Communications Server is in deep trouble as well.

There are a number of software PBX servers on the market and several VMWare implementations; I used Trixbox because I am familiar with it.

MS Windows made system administration easy but with mind numbing simplicity. As if they were going to train chimps to do system administration. While Lotus Foundations makes Domino and basic firewall, backup, email, web server, VPN and DNS one click easy they also included the capability to extend the system with a wide array of non-proprietary systems.

This is starting to look like System Administration can fun as well as easy! Lookout MS, IBM brought the fun back to easy!

Here is a Youtube video that does a walk through http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yalyeSrc_n8
Configuring TrixboxCE involves more time than Youtube can give but Asterisk Tutorials cover that part well, Trixbox.org forums are valuable.

The VMWare part is a no brainer if you have VWWare installed on your Foundations Server.

Think of this: One Foundations Server – Backup (includes your Trixbox Configuration) Firewall (not modifications needed for TrixboxCE), email (get your voice messages in an email), Using VoipStreet I get 20 simultanious connections to the same PBX without dedicated hardware, if your network connections is clean and strong nobody can tell the difference. A low end VoIP instrument with 4 extensions can be as little as $75. unlimited extensions, music on hold (customizable so you can run clasic rock or business comercials), find-me, follow-me features, Call Bridging (conference calling), A whole lot more.

And the price for all this wonderfulness is a small learning curve. Not as easy as managing a Lotus Foundations server but almost!
