There is now Windows Home Server based on 2003 supporting up to 10 users and a Windows Server Foundation based on 2008 supporting up to 15 users.

If I were a small business with 5 or 6 employees, I would have to think really hard to consider Windows Server Foundation because it limits my growth (ever did a MS Server migration?), it does not let me go back (no HyperV virtualization, unless I use VMware) and I get to have all the overhead of owning a Windows Server.

On the other hand, if all I want is just to get by, the Windows Home Server will do fine.

Derek, that is a very valid statement. Which small business owner wants to plan to 'limit' their growth? Specially in our economic environment where most of the growth is predicted to be in the SMB sector.

Our company here in Calgary supports both Windows and IBM SBS'. I think it is almost like Microsoft is insulting small businesses by providing such a product that doesn't really give customers the ability to grow. Most of my clients have growth plans, they want more staff, they want to expand offices and take their businesses to the next level over the next few years. It simply doesn't make sense to have a server that is restricted to 15 users, where you can't transfer the license and comes with half the solutions Microsoft SBS 2008 has and IBM Lotus Foundations. The long run cost for my clients would go straight up if they purchased something like this I would imagine.

If we presume that Microsoft wanted to confuse the market then they would have been better off by using 'Foundations' to market a completely different technology, such as a computer game or a networking administration tool for Back Office. All they are doing is making the word "Foundation(s)" synonymous with a server for a SMB which just validates the incumbent - Lotus Foundations Server.

What could Microsoft possibly dream up to borrow the words "intelligent disk backup" ?
Anyone have any alternative to "intelligent" that might be appropriate for them?
